Note: Responding to the Office’s Invalid Reply

Representative Goldman’s district office responded to my request for assistance by stating that “our office is not an investigative agency” and directing me to email the House Judiciary Committee. This response misunderstands the nature of my request and the responsibilities of a congressional district office.

I did not ask the office to conduct an investigation. I requested standard constituent casework, which every congressional office is obligated to provide under House rules. This includes:

1. Agency Inquiry A district office may contact federal agencies—such as the Department of State or the Department of Justice—on behalf of a constituent to request information, clarification, or assistance. This is routine casework, not an investigation.

2. Congressional Referral / Transmittal A Representative may forward a constituent’s case file to the appropriate committee. This is a standard congressional function and does not require the office to investigate anything.

The office’s reply framed my request as an attempt to initiate an investigation, when in reality I was asking for the same basic constituent services provided to millions of Americans every year.
